The new decade got off to a spectacular start for Phil, as he carried out his duties as one of three Float Judges for the 131st Rose Parade®. The judging activities began several days before the parade with guided visits to the decorating places, where teams were putting the finishing touches on the 39 participating floats.
Phil and fellow judges Hitomi Gilliam and Lilit Khatchaturian reviewed and scored the floats according to established criteria and selected 24 floats to receive awards recognizing excellence in a variety of categories. They awarded the top prize—the Sweepstakes Trophy—to The UPS Store, Inc. for their float titled “Stories Change Our World.”
The whirlwind of judging activities included press events as well as social events, where Phil was lucky enough to reconnect with old friends from his early schooldays in the Pasadena Unified School District. It all added up to a one-in-a-lifetime “bucket list” experience.
